In most cities, you don't need a permit for a Christmas Tree Shop/Lot if it is temporary.  However, you do need to clear the use of the lot. That is make sure that the zoning allows you to sell trees at that location.  The process is the same as a business licens application so in that respect, you will need a clearance to sell trees at a lot for the Christmas season.

The Business Licenses division is responsible for the help in obtaining  of all your  licenses, yard sale permits, contractors, consultants, and home occupation licenses  as well as Christmas Tree Shops and Lots.

The Business License Division works with planning, building, code enforcement and the Sheriff’s Department to ensure compliance with the City, County and State requirements.  You can also get permits for special events such as carnivals, rummage sales, yard sales, firework stands, Christmas tree sales and the annual Christmas Parade vendor permits.

Why do I need a Business License to sell Christmas Trees?


- Any individual, corporation or sole proprietor who wishes to conduct business must obtain a business license. In fact, no person shall engage in business or transact and carry on a business, trade, profession, calling or occupation in the city without first having procured a license to do so or without complying with any and all applicable provisions of the Business License Section in the Code.

Since you are an employer, here are the licenses and tax ids you are legally required to obtain before starting retail operations:

1. A business tax registration license 

2. A federal tax id number if you are a partnership or you want to use it instead of you social security number to open a bank account.

3. a federal tax id employer number as well as

4. a state ein employer number and

5. A sellers permit.

- Once your application forms and filing fee are received and approved, we will mail you an invoice of your Business License Tax Registration Tax Liability. Once we receive your payment,  we will send it and you will then issue a license.

Next, if you intend to hire anyone soon, you must obtain a Federal Employee Identification Number. This will set up your IRS witholding account and ensure that your LLC does not run into to trouble with the IRS at any point for unintentionally failing to withold wages when it should have.
